  • 1821 - John Rylands moved to Wigan from St Helens. 

  • 1822 - Rylands & Sons successful progress could be related to the expansion of the firm. On the May 24th John Rylands became the owner of a plot of land in the High street of Manchester.

  • 1823 - Mr. Rylands began his business in Manchester and opened a new warehouse for the firm at 11 New High Street. Due to the warehouse expanding, captivating the neighbouring buildings and even the whole avenue, the New High street disappeared from the map in the 1860's. 

  • 1824 - He became a member of the Portico Library in Manchester and remained its subscriber until April 1826.

  • 1825 - He married his first wife - Dinah Raby on March 17th at St. John's Church in Manchester with whom John Rylands had 3 sons and 4 daughters. 

  • The company bought two large properties in Douglas valley, establishing Wigan Linen Works for the spinning of linen thread, throstle frames and as a consequence became independent for the supply of yarn.

  • 1826 - On May 20th John Rylands became father to his first son John Garthwaite Rylands.

  • 1828 - The birth of William Rylands on 1st January, the second son of John Rylands.

  • 1829 - Third son - Joseph Rylands was born on the 9th of July. 

     The death of John's mother - Elizabeth Rylands at the age of 68.
