  • 1880 April 8 - Rylands received an "award of knighthood of the Order of the Crown" in Italy.    

December - Rylands & Spencer leasehold of area in Tib Street, Manchester.          

  •   1881 - rental agreement of Gidlow House, Wigan to Elias Ramicar.

  •   1882 - subscription of 1,000 shares to Manchester Underwriters Association Ltd. 

June - discussion with Daniel Adamson about the Manchester Ship Canal project.

August - strike caused by "self - actor minders" in Gorton Mills.

October - acquisition of the house in Ryde, Haven Street.

December - fire broke out in Wood Street (London) warehouse. The damage done by fire totalled up to £300,000. 

  •   1883 - Rylands obtained Wood Street warehouses for £60,000. It was rebuilt in 1884.

November - John Rylands signed his testament. 

  •   1885 - Third meeting regarding the Manchester Ship Canal project.

  •  1886 - Longford Institute was introduced to public. Total price of £3,000.

September - rent of the area on Haven Street, therefore to construct gasworks for Longford Institute.

  •  1887 - took on the position of principal of University Collage of North Wales. 

  •  1888 February - attended his last shareholders meeting.

     

 December 11 - John Rylands passed away, at the age of 87, at his home in Stretford.
