1830 - Tragic death of his 6 month old son - Joseph Rylands. The new - born was buried in Wigan at Gidlow Lane School.

1831 - John Rylands started association with Manchester Royal exchange and it lasted up until 1877.

On July 4th, the birth of twins - Eliza and Emily Rylands.

1832 - the year of misery and heartbreak. 10th of January - the death of Eliza Rylands (6 months old). The following moth John Rylands suffered another shock - the death of Emily Rylands. Both twins were buried with their brother Joseph in Wigan at Gidlow Lane School.

Unfortunate death of a stillborn - Eliza II on July 12th.

1834 - The birth of John Rylands last daughter Emily Rylands on 15th May, yet another disaster shook John's life, Emily Rylands II died when she was only 6 months. The death of his five children within a short period of time left him emotionally drained and also the loss of his dearest mother left John miserable. In the same year he decided to leave Wigan and moved to Manchester.

1838 - John Rylands was offered to become a member of Manchester City Council, yet he declined.

1839 - On January the 21st Rylands became the owner of Ainsworth Cotton Mills.
