1801 - John Rylands was born on the 7th February at Parr.

1817 - John Rylands learned how to weave, became a land - loom manufacturer and merchant for the first time in his life. At the same time he was working at his father, Joseph Rylands draper's shop. He showed his outstanding skills as a retailer of trade.

1819 - The establishment of the cotton firm Rylands & Sons by his father at the age of 52 with his three sons - Joseph, Richard and John who was at the age of 18.In the late 19th century it was acknowledged as the most successful company in Britain. The company was mainly focused on Chester trade and provided hand - weaving of coarse coloured linen and calico goods that were sold at a reasonable price, yet it was a necessity in people's every day life, such as curtains, pillowcases and duvets. Within the company John Rylands had a commercial traveller's duty.
