  •  1870 - Gorton workers started strike in July organised by self - actor minders.

     Rent of Heapey Bleach Works on 1 October.

  •  1871 – Partnership of Rylands & Cross came to an end. 

  •  1872 - Accompanied by Enriqueta Augustina Tennant, Rylands together with his wife Martha Carden visited France and Italy.

     Devastating death of John Garthwaite Rylands at the age of 46. John Rylands lost his last son and heir. 

     Longford Works were put up on market by Thomas Cooke and sold to Reuben Spencer. The Longford Works were sold                for Â£44,000.November 18, the warehouse was open for business.

     On November 28, Rylands decided to stop the partnership with Spencer, therefore all the businesses will remain under                  Rylands & Sons name.

  •  1873 February - Reuben Spencer became an assistant in businesses and also as an attorney.

     May - Rylands cancelled his "grant of power of attorney" to Reuben Spencer.

     December - rental agreement Portland St., Manchester possessions. 

  •  1874 - acquisition of Great Bridgewater Mills for the price of £8,340.

     April - rental of the offices in Paris.

     May - acquisition of Swinton Mills.

     Launch of the Temple City for Dr. Parker, £100 contribution towards its construction.

     July - purchase of Commercial Rd., London factory. 

     November - acquisition of Waterloo Mills, Chorley. The cost of the mills was £9,050 as well as Hulme St. Mills that cost              Â£64,900.

  •  1875 February 13 - Martha Rylands death at the age of 69. 

     June - acquisition of 67 Queen's Gate for £6,500. The premises had previously belonged to James Shaw. 

     Acquisition of Bolton Mills - Mather St. and Fletcher St. Mills for £49, 277.

     October - John Rylands (age 74) and Enriqueta Augustina Tennant (age 32) marriage in Kensington Congregational Chapel.

     December - leasehold of warehouses located on Portland Street, Faulkner Street and Princess Street.

  •  1876 - Abbey Hey School in Gorton was opened to public, remained open till 1894.

     December - purchase of Sunnyside as well as 2,834 square yards of Longford domain at a cost of £1,540.

  • 1877 April - acquisition of property in La Spezia, Italy.                                            July - Rylands & Sons opened up their company's branch in Rio de Janeiro. November - business establishment in Glasgow.

  •  1878 January - May - together with Enriqueta, John Rylands visited "the Continent" and Paris.

      May - rent of area in Horwich for construction.

     November - leasehold of Stretford Hall for 8s. 8d.

      December - Edward Byrom lent £10,000 of John Rylands for Wigan premises.

  •  1879 - James Worral loan of £20,000 in order to secure part of Gorton Mills.

       June - acquisition of 34 - 37 Via Garibaldi premises in Rome. Market price of the property in 1892 was £6,338.
