Manchester Pride
Every year in Manchester City centre there is a celebration of the gay community. This takes place during the summer months and its main attraction for families is a large parade throughout the city consisting of Floats, dancers, performers and music. Anybody can become involved, not just those from the gay community, thus strengthening the relationship between Manchester’s many different communities. During the Gay Pride festival there is also a ‘Big weekend’, which is where a number of famous music artists arrive in the city and play to the crowd popular amongst the younger groups of Manchester. Although the Pride festival is a celebration of the gay communities in Manchester it is also a time to remember those in the community and all over the world that have lost their battle against HIV, a candle light vigil is held to reflect and join together to fight it.

Time-line
Below is a breif timeline showing the evolution of Manchester Pride

IDAHO
IDAHO – the international day against Homophobia and Transphobia also takes place in Manchester city centre, with a range of events taking place to celebrate, including a run through Manchester to raise money for Manchester Pride community fund and the coming together of everybody in Manchester for drinks and food. Besides all the fun to be found there is also a chance for the people of Manchester and its visitors to join a debate about current issues surrounding the gay communities.

Aside from all the festivals and entertainment found in Manchester’s gay village there are also a number of different activities to do. Firstly you can take a visit to the Alan Turning memorial in Sackville gardens. Alan Turning was a code breaker during World War Two who was eventually imprisoned for his relationship with another man. He is a very important figure in LGBT history as he never attempted to hide his true feelings towards the opposite sex. Aside from this you can also take guided tours around the gay village learning about Manchester LGBT history.
